The Department of External Affairs was established on 5 January 1901. It managed relations between the Commonwealth and the states. It also handled early immigration and electoral matters. Foreign policy was limited at first due to British oversight. Over time, the department evolved into today’s foreign affairs ministry. Its creation showed early national coordination.
