The Australian Customs Service began operations on 3 January 1901. Customs had been a major revenue source for the colonies. Federation unified tariffs and border controls across states. This change removed internal trade barriers. It encouraged economic integration and national commerce. Customs duties became a federal responsibility. The service later expanded into border protection roles.
