Defense responsibilities were officially transferred to the Commonwealth on 4 January 1901. Colonial militias were reorganized under federal control. This allowed coordinated national defense planning. The move reduced duplication between states. It also aligned Australia more closely with British military strategy. The change eventually led to the creation of the Australian Army. It marked a step toward defense independence.
