On International Women’s Day, the Bank of Canada launched a public consultation. This aimed to select an iconic Canadian woman to appear on a future banknote. Canadians submitted tens of thousands of nominations during the process. The consultation was part of a broader effort to improve representation on Canadian currency. It led to a shortlist process and, later, the selection of a woman to feature on a new note.
