Canadian officer Charles Foulkes was promoted to general. He became the first to hold the appointment of chairman of the chiefs of staff committee. In that role, he coordinated the three armed services and provided unified, single-source military advice to the Minister of National Defence. This appointment strengthened how Canada organized senior military leadership and decision-making after World War II.
