Helen Mamayaok Maksagak died on this day in Cambridge Bay, Nunavut. She was a major Inuit leader and a key public figure in northern Canada. She was the first woman and the first Inuk to serve as commissioner of the Northwest Territories. She also served as the first commissioner of Nunavut soon after the territory was created.
