Marguerite Bourgeoys died in Montreal on 12 January 1700. She was a major figure in early New France and is closely linked to the development of education for girls in the colony. Bourgeoys founded the Congrégation de Notre-Dame, a religious community that supported teaching and social work. Her legacy became especially important in Montreal’s early institutions and Catholic life.
