Description

A passenger train derailed at the Desjardins Canal near Hamilton, Canada West (now Ontario). Several cars plunged into the canal after the bridge gave way. Many passengers were killed or injured, making it one of the deadliest rail disasters in early Canadian history. The tragedy highlighted safety risks in early railway infrastructure. It also pushed public attention toward stronger inspection and engineering practices.
