14-year-old Leonard Thompson received the first injection of an insulin preparation at Toronto General Hospital. The treatment came from the University of Toronto team working on pancreatic extracts. Thompson’s first dose was not fully purified and caused problems. However, it proved the concept that insulin could treat diabetes. Within days, a more purified version was developed and worked far better.
