The holiday was created to recognize Louis Riel’s historic role and to reflect Manitoba’s Métis and provincial history. It also aligned Manitoba with other provinces that had introduced a mid-winter holiday. The day has since become an annual statutory holiday in Manitoba, observed on the third Monday of February.
