This day was marked across Canada as the first National Ribbon Skirt Day. The day was created after Parliament passed Bill S-219. This designates January 4 each year for this national observance. It is intended to recognize and celebrate the ribbon skirt, a traditional garment strongly tied to Indigenous identity and culture. The day also grew from public attention to discrimination faced by an Indigenous student for wearing a ribbon skirt at school.
