Description

Canadian General Charles Foulkes accepted the surrender of German forces in the Netherlands at Wageningen. This was a major milestone at the end of the Second World War in Europe. It marked the effective liberation of the Netherlands and the end of large-scale fighting there. Canadian forces had played a central role in operations across the country in the months before the surrender. The event remains an important part of Canadian–Dutch historical memory.
