Louis Riel surrendered after the defeat of the resistance movement associated with the 1885 conflict (now Saskatchewan). His surrender became a turning point because it led directly to his arrest and later trial. The event also deepened political tensions in Canada. It includes divisions between English- and French-speaking communities. Riel’s fate became a lasting national controversy.
