Description

Nunavut officially became Canada’s newest territory on 1991. This created a new public government in the eastern and central Arctic, with Iqaluit as the capital. The change followed years of negotiations and the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement, one of the largest Indigenous land claim settlements in Canadian history. The creation of Nunavut shifted Canada’s political map by dividing the Northwest Territories into two parts. It also aimed to support Inuit self-determination within Canada’s federal system.
