Description

The Rebellion Losses Bill cleared a key legislative hurdle when it passed the Legislative Council of the Province of Canada. The bill aimed to compensate people in Lower Canada whose property was damaged during the 1837–38 rebellions. Its progress became intensely controversial and fueled political tension. The bill’s passage helped set up the later crisis when it received royal assent and sparked major unrest in Montreal.
