The data was captured by Satellite 1963 38C (a U.S. Navy research satellite). It passed through the high-latitude ionosphere at an altitude of 1,100 km. The event caused Polar Cap Absorption (PCA). This is a phenomenon where solar particles interfere with the ionosphere, leading to major radio blackouts across northern Canada.
