Terry Fox began his cross-country “Marathon of Hope” in April 1980, in St. John’s, Newfoundland. He started the run to raise funds and awareness for cancer research after losing a leg to cancer. Fox’s effort initially drew limited attention, but support grew quickly as he continued. The run became one of the most famous charitable acts in Canadian history. Although he did not finish the full distance, his campaign inspired ongoing annual fundraising.
