The Toronto professional ice hockey team played its first game with a new name: the Toronto Maple Leafs. The team was nearly sold and moved to Philadelphia. Conn Smythe led a group that bought the team just in time. Smythe chose the name "Maple Leafs" to honor Canadian soldiers who fought in World War I, especially at the Battle of Vimy Ridge. In that first game, the new Maple Leafs defeated the New York Americans by a score of 4–1 at the Mutual Street Arena.
