On June 17, 1775, colonial forces and British troops fought the Battle of Bunker Hill near Boston. Although technically a British victory, colonial forces inflicted heavy casualties. The battle demonstrated that colonial fighters could stand up to British regulars. The phrase “Don’t fire until you see the whites of their eyes” is associated with the event. The battle strengthened colonial resolve. It helped push both sides deeper into full-scale war.
