Description

On October 15, 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed the Clayton Antitrust Act into law. The act strengthened earlier antitrust measures such as the Sherman Act by clarifying which business practices were illegal. It barred certain types of price discrimination, exclusive contracts, and mergers that could reduce competition. The law also limited the use of antitrust rules against labor unions, treating them differently from profit-seeking corporations. Enforcement of the act fell to the Department of Justice and the newly created Federal Trade Commission. The Clayton Act remains an important piece of U.S. competition law.
