On October 13, 1775, the Continental Congress authorized the creation of a naval force during the American Revolutionary War. This step formed what became known as the Continental Navy. The early navy was small and often outmatched by the British fleet, but it harassed enemy ships and protected American commerce. Naval officers and crews also gained experience that would help shape the future U.S. Navy. The date is now recognized as the official birthday of the U.S. Navy. The founding reflected the colonies’ need to contest British power at sea as well as on land.
