Description

On July 4, 1776, the Continental Congress formally approved the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia. The document announced that the thirteen American colonies regarded themselves as free and independent states, no longer subject to British rule. Drafted primarily by Thomas Jefferson, it articulated ideas about natural rights, popular sovereignty, and the legitimacy of revolution. The announcement was risky, as the colonies were already engaged in war with Britain. Copies of the Declaration were quickly printed and distributed throughout the colonies. Over time, the date became the principal national holiday in the United States and a symbol of American ideals.
