Description

On July 9, 1776, New York’s delegates to the Continental Congress received authorization to support the Declaration of Independence. New York had initially abstained from the July 4 vote. Once its provincial congress approved, the colony fully joined the independence movement. This step created unanimous support among the thirteen colonies. It strengthened the political legitimacy of the new United States. The decision also underscored the role of local assemblies in the revolutionary process.
