Description

On July 22, 1934, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) opened its doors. It guaranteed bank deposits and helped restore public confidence after the Great Depression. The program reduced the likelihood of bank runs. Banks joined the system to reassure customers their money was safe. Over time, deposit insurance limits increased. The FDIC remains central to the stability of the U.S. banking system.
