On July 29, 1954, the USS Nautilus was launched as the world’s first nuclear-powered submarine. Its reactor allowed virtually limitless range underwater. The submarine demonstrated the potential of nuclear propulsion. The Nautilus later completed the first journey beneath the North Pole. The vessel changed naval strategy worldwide. Its launch marked a milestone in Cold War naval technology.
