On September 23, 1642, Harvard College held its first commencement exercises in Massachusetts. The ceremony marked the graduation of the college’s earliest group of students. Harvard had been founded in 1636 to train ministers and civic leaders for the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Over time, it expanded into a broad liberal arts institution. The commencement tradition established by Harvard became a model for later American colleges and universities.
