Description

On August 2, 1790, the young United States officially began its first national census. The count was required by the Constitution to apportion representation in Congress and direct taxes among the states. Marshals and assistants traveled from town to town recording households and population figures. The process took months and faced practical challenges in remote areas. The first census reported a population of just under four million people. That initial effort created a baseline for measuring the country’s growth.
