Description

On June 21, 1964, civil-rights organizations launched Freedom Summer in Mississippi. Volunteers arrived to register Black voters and establish community programs. The effort faced intense hostility and violence. On the same day, three civil-rights workers disappeared, later found murdered. Their deaths prompted national outrage. Freedom Summer highlighted the dangers activists faced in the Deep South.
