Description

On September 16, 1915, the U.S. Senate ratified the Haitian–American Convention, which granted the United States extensive authority over Haiti’s finances and security. The agreement followed a U.S. military intervention that began earlier that year. Under the convention, American officials supervised Haitian customs revenues and helped reorganize the country’s institutions. Supporters argued that the arrangement would stabilize Haiti and protect U.S. interests. Critics saw it as an example of American imperialism in the Caribbean.
