On the night of August 25, 2005, Hurricane Katrina made its first U.S. landfall as a Category 1 hurricane near the border of Miami-Dade and Broward counties in Florida. The storm brought heavy rain, strong winds, and localized flooding across South Florida. After crossing the peninsula, Katrina moved into the Gulf of Mexico and rapidly intensified over warm waters. The Florida landfall was an early chapter in what would become one of the most destructive hurricanes in U.S. history. The storm later strengthened to a major hurricane before striking the Gulf Coast.
