Description

On October 17, 1989, a magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck the San Francisco Bay Area. Known as the Loma Prieta earthquake, it occurred shortly before a World Series game in San Francisco. The quake caused freeway collapses, damaged buildings, and knocked out power across the region. At least 60 people were killed and thousands were injured. Television coverage of the damaged Bay Bridge and other structures brought the disaster to a national audience. The earthquake led to major investments in seismic retrofitting and emergency planning in California.
