Description

On February 12, 1909, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) was founded in New York City. The organization grew out of the Niagara Movement and was established to fight racial discrimination and promote equality under the law. Founding members included W.E.B. Du Bois, Ida B. Wells, Mary White Ovington, and others. The NAACP became instrumental in landmark civil rights cases such as Brown v. Board of Education. Its founding date was chosen to coincide with Abraham Lincoln’s birthday.
