Description

On July 13, 1863, violent riots erupted in New York City over the Union draft. Many working-class residents, especially Irish immigrants, opposed conscription policies. Violence targeted government buildings, draft offices, and African American residents. Federal troops were eventually deployed to restore order. The riots resulted in widespread destruction and numerous deaths. They remain one of the most serious episodes of civil unrest in American history.
