Description

On September 25, 1890, Congress established Sequoia National Park in California to protect giant sequoia trees and surrounding mountain landscapes. It was the second national park created in the continental United States. The park preserved some of the largest and oldest trees on Earth, including groves that had been threatened by logging. Sequoia later became linked administratively with Kings Canyon National Park. The creation of the park helped advance the broader national park movement and conservation ethic in the United States.
