On March 26, 1979, the Egypt–Israel peace treaty was signed on the White House lawn in Washington, D.C. The agreement followed the Camp David Accords negotiated the previous year. President Jimmy Carter hosted Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin. The treaty ended the state of war between Egypt and Israel and provided for the return of the Sinai Peninsula to Egypt. It marked the first peace agreement between Israel and an Arab state. The treaty reshaped Middle Eastern politics and highlighted the role of U.S. diplomacy in the region.
