Description

On November 7, 1786, residents of Stoughton, Massachusetts, founded the Stoughton Musical Society. It is widely regarded as the oldest continuously operating musical organization in the United States. Members initially met to improve church singing and learn sacred music, reflecting New England’s strong congregational traditions. Over time they broadened their repertoire to include secular and historical works. The society preserved many early American choral pieces that might otherwise have disappeared. Its long life shows how local volunteer groups helped sustain musical culture in the early United States.
