Description

On June 23, 1972, Title IX of the Education Amendments was signed into law. The legislation prohibits sex discrimination in federally funded educational programs. It had enormous effects on sports, academics, and opportunities for women and girls. Schools expanded athletic programs to comply with the law. Title IX also became important in cases involving harassment and equal treatment. Its legacy continues in ongoing debates over equality in education.
