Description

On February 27, 1951, the Twenty-second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified, limiting presidents to two terms in office. The amendment was a response to Franklin D. Roosevelt’s four elections and was intended to preserve the balance of power and prevent excessive executive control. It formalized the two-term tradition established by George Washington.
