Description

On June 14, 1775, the Second Continental Congress created the Continental Army. George Washington was appointed commander-in-chief the next day. The formation of the army marked the colonies’ shift toward organized resistance. Early forces came from existing militias and volunteers. The army played a central role in securing American independence. June 14 is now celebrated as the Army’s official birthday.
