On July 23, 1832, U.S. militia and Sauk warriors clashed during the Black Hawk War. The conflict began after Black Hawk’s band returned to Illinois lands. Tensions escalated due to misunderstandings and contested treaties. Fighting spread through the region, involving multiple tribes and militia groups. The war ended with Black Hawk’s capture. It marked the final major Native American resistance east of the Mississippi.
