On October 10, 1845, the U.S. Naval School opened at Annapolis, Maryland, and later became the United States Naval Academy. The school was founded to provide formal education and training for naval officers. Midshipmen studied navigation, engineering, seamanship, and other subjects needed for service at sea. The academy grew over time and added new programs, including aviation and nuclear engineering. Many graduates went on to command ships, fleets, and major military commands. The Naval Academy remains one of the most selective and influential military schools in the United States.
