On November 10, 1775, the Continental Congress resolved to raise two battalions of Marines, creating the forerunner of the U.S. Marine Corps. Recruitment took place in Philadelphia, traditionally associated with Tun Tavern as an early recruiting point. The Continental Marines served aboard naval vessels and in amphibious operations, including raids in the Caribbean.
