On June 11, 1963, Governor George Wallace attempted to block two Black students, Vivian Malone and James Hood, from enrolling at the University of Alabama. Wallace stood in a doorway to symbolically resist integration. President Kennedy federalized the Alabama National Guard to enforce desegregation. Confronted with federal authority, Wallace stepped aside. The enrollment marked another victory for the civil-rights movement. The event is remembered as a dramatic challenge to segregationist policies.
