On July 20, 1976, NASA’s Viking 1 became the first U.S. spacecraft to land successfully on Mars. It transmitted the first clear photos from the planet’s surface. Viking 1 included experiments searching for signs of life in Martian soil. Although results were inconclusive, the mission expanded scientific understanding of Mars. Viking’s data influenced later missions. Its landing was a milestone in planetary exploration.
