Description

On February 21, 1961, the 23rd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified, granting residents of Washington D.C. the right to vote in presidential elections. Before this, citizens of the capital had no representation in the Electoral College. The amendment provided D.C. electors “equal to the least populous state.” This milestone expanded democratic participation and marked progress in suffrage rights within the U.S. federal system.
