Description

On June 20, 1863, West Virginia became the 35th state. Its creation resulted from internal divisions in Virginia over secession. Western counties opposed joining the Confederacy and chose to remain loyal to the Union. The new state entered during the Civil War under controversial circumstances. After the war, West Virginia continued to develop distinct economic and cultural identities. Statehood marked one of the most unusual processes in U.S. history.
