On August 26, 1970, thousands of women across the United States participated in the Women’s Strike for Equality. Organized partly by the National Organization for Women, the strike called attention to issues such as workplace discrimination, reproductive rights, and unpaid domestic labor. Demonstrations took place in cities including New York, Washington, and Los Angeles. Participants used marches, speeches, and symbolic walkouts to make their point. Media coverage helped bring feminist concerns to a wider audience. The strike is remembered as a major event in the second wave of the women’s movement.
