January 1 is celebrated as New Year’s Day, and in Catholic tradition it is also the Feast of the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God.
- Neujahr (symbolic) – From German, meaning New Year. Used symbolically to mark the beginning of the year and renewal.
- Manuel – From the Hebrew Immanuel, meaning God is with us. A name long used in Christian tradition.
- Sylvester – From the Latin Silvestris, meaning of the forest. In Austria and much of Europe, December 31 is known as Silvester (Saint Sylvester’s Day), so the name carries strong New Year’s associations.
