Gatorade was developed in 1965 by a team of scientists at the University of Florida College of Medicine. The goal was to solve a problem for the university's football team, the Florida Gators: players were losing too much fluid and electrolytes through sweat and were suffering from heat-related illnesses. The team, led by Dr. Robert Cade, created a drink containing water, salt, sugar, and lemon juice to replace what was being lost. The first version was reportedly so foul-tasting that it made some players vomit, but after adding more sweetener and flavor, it became a success. The Gators went on to win the Orange Bowl in 1967, and the opposing coach famously remarked, 'We didn't have Gatorade. That made the difference.' This launched the multi-billion dollar sports drink industry.
