Description
Irish Coffee was created in 1943 by Joe Sheridan, a chef at the flying boat terminal in Foynes, County Limerick. A flight to New York had to turn back due to bad weather, and Sheridan wanted to prepare something warm and welcoming for the cold, weary passengers. He added Irish whiskey to their coffee and topped it with a layer of thick cream. When an American passenger asked if it was Brazilian coffee, Sheridan replied, 'No, that's Irish coffee.' The drink was later brought to the United States by travel writer Stanton Delaplane, who introduced it to the Buena Vista Cafe in San Francisco. The secret to a perfect Irish Coffee is that the cream must be lightly whipped so it floats on top; the hot coffee and whiskey are then sipped through the cool layer of cream.
